Sonic Practices - Working with sound as artistic material
Course description
This workshop series will explore techniques and technologies for working creatively with sound from an artist’s perspective. From an introductory overview on psychoacoustics and auditory concepts we will explore different ways of working with sound as an artistic medium through practice. Topics covered will include: listening practice, field recording techniques (including specialised techniques), spatial audio, digital audio editing and playback formats. We will investigate sound practice as a mutually technical and artistic medium, and practice remaining critical whilst exploring technical possibilities in order to get technical results that are appropriate and meaningful to their artistic context.
Content
The workshop will consist of four morning sessions where we will work collaboratively, but participants can also explore individual ideas and projects. The emphasis will be on practical work and experiential learning, and there will be the opportunity to continue between sessions on participants’ own time.
Following these sessions, the workshop will culminate in a dissemination evening where participants will present some of the ideas they have explored during the workshop sessions.
Workshop 1 – Tuesday 6 Oct 2026 at 09:00 to 13:00
Workshop 2 – Wednesday 7 Oct 2026 at 09:00 to 13:00
Workshop 3 – Tuesday 13 Oct 2026 at 09:00 to 13:00
Workshop 4 – Wednesday 14 Oct 2026 at 09:00 to 13:00
Dissemination – Friday 15 Oct 2026 at 16:00 to 19:00
No prior experience with audio or specific technical level is required, but participants need to bring their own headphones and computer with a copy of the digital audio workstation REAPER installed before the first session. REAPER can be downloaded here and is free to evaluate for 60 days. If participants already have their own audio equipment - such as microphones, audio recorders, etc. - they are very welcome to bring this to the workshops.
Course leader
The workshop will be led by artist Tim Bishop. Tim is a Lund-based artist and sound designer working with one-to-one performance, spatial audio and installation works. Tim’s work has been shown at places such as Inter Arts Center, Lunds konsthall, Dunkers kulturhus, Malmöfestivalen and Arnolfini (UK), and Tim has worked as spatial audio designer on projects with Bombina Bombast, Malmö Stadsteater, Teater Ambulansen, and more.
